Amazon Glacier Cost Calculator for Simple Home Upload & Backup

Posted on Monday, January 1st, 2018

Use this form to calculate the one-time upload cost and recurring monthly cost of storing your data in Amazon Glacier as of 1/1/2018. This is specifically using S3 bucket to store the data and making a lifecycle request to convert that data to Glacier tier (the way Arq Backup client executes backup). It does not estimate retrieval costs, deletion costs, or additional incremental backups. It is also based on US West Coast Oregon region pricing. YMMV depending on region your DC is. You can check the Amazon Glacier prices here.

Also, for the first year if you're a new member, you get 2,000 PUT requests per month for free. This calculator doesn't take that into account or any other free-tier considerations.

This calculator is based on a discussion I had with an Amazon tech to discuss my specific storage use case: I would spend some time uploading a large number of files (1M) totalling 600GB of data, and then after that I would probably be uploading a negligible amount per month for storage (at most 100MB I would imagine).

I couldn't find a calculator that really addressed what I was worried about, which was the one-time cost of this upload, so I made one in case anyone wanted an idea as well. For more details read about my specific home backup setup using Drobo 5N, Arq Backup, and Amazon Glacier.
