Every now and then I spit out an eloquent pearl of inspiring wisdom beyond my years. Well I just had another one, and here it is:

It is easier to create yourself, than to find yourself. Especially when often we don't know what it is we're looking for, or whether or not we've found it.

The "wisdom beyond my years" bit is completely tongue in cheek, as most people know I don't take myself that seriously. It's really just a follow-up for this affirmation by Thomas Szasz. I appreciate what...

Don't know why I'm up this late, but I need to post this photo I took earlier today of my two favorite people. I've decided I am going to draw it or paint it or something with it. I love my iPhone camera!

In other news, I got to interview Tony Robbins yesterday! And I was tasked with writing an article on him, which I felt very excited to do, if only for the challenge of it. The article can be found here.

Tomorrow is our road trip to LA/San Diego...

I have no idea what I did on Friday. I think I was working until late Friday night, and I know I ran 2 more miles in my Vibram's.

Saturday, Quang and I went to Marlo's housewarming party which was great food, great beer, and great company. I really like the layout of Marlo's new house, and I'm very impressed that he actually owns it. It's a three-story condo in what looks like a new San Jose development. It of course made me think of when I can one day own my own place, or if that's even in the cards for me. I have a feeling it is, though I used to not mind the idea of renting for...

This morning was the first time I ran in my Vibram Five Fingers on the common sidewalk streets! And let me tell you, though I felt maybe a tiny twinge of embarrassment in the very beginning, to run in those shoes seriously felt amazing! I ran 2 miles without any discomfort, and part of it was on the Guadelupe Trail next to my apartment complex.

I think my calves have definitely gotten stronger as a result of these shoes, and it's hard to describe the feeling of pushing off the forefoot and toes that makes the running seem so exhilarating. I just hope I can keep this up for 3 miles,...

I am counting calories, as I mentioned before, and I decided to update a page with the spreadsheet I'm keeping. It might help me keep up with it.

http://jessicachanstudios.com/daily-calorie-count/

While I don't think counting daily calories is a good idea for everyone to do for the rest of their lives, I think it's a very good exercise to do for at least 4-6 months. By being overly obsessive for just that short period of time, it gives you a good grasp on how many calories different foods really have. And with...

Yesterday was awesome, but today was depressing for no good reason other than to offset yesterday.

Monday morning, woke up at 7:30a and made it to 24 Hour Fitness with Quang. Then had a nice breakfast, a great meeting, a yummy lunch, and a super productive day at the cafe where I got all my work done in time to relax before my basketball game. Another great win. I made two baskets again, and have definitely improved driving the ball and not getting so panicked that I get stuck. But I have many things to work on still which actually gets me excited. It was 4 on 4 for the first half...

My first real hike/run in my vibram five fingers (or, "toe-shoes," which is what we're calling them now). I signed up for this race: http://www.racethrutheredwoods.com/ which is a 10K trail run through the Redwoods. I'm excited! It should be really pretty. It's the first race I've signed up for in awhile, after I humbly bowed out of the marathon I signed up and paid for in March :(

But I'm dusting my shoes off and going at it again, which I think is what matters.

In Los Gatos, which is where Quang and I went...

The Cheesecake Factory is my favorite place to go to eat around here. I don't know what it is about that place - not only is the selection amazing, the cheesecake amazing, and the bread they serve in the beginning of meals amazing, I've just never had a bad time there. Ever. I love when he takes me out for no apparent reason, and I realize, to my delight, that I have a choice between dressing up and dressing down. True, the portion sizes are enormous and the calorie counts are just as enormous, but they repack the food for you and it reheats well. Yes, I heart TCF.

Went to a pool...

Took my first drawing class today at the Campbell Community Rec center. I was... 20 minutes late, but hey, it's the first class! It felt really good to draw again. After a hard day at the cafe, where I was super productive might I add, it was nice to focus on something mindless yet stimulating and fulfilling at the same time - a conundrum that I don't think I'll find many other places.

I've taken art courses before, so the basics of shading, light, and shapes left a little challenge to be desired, but I took my work home and sprayed it anyway-- the images below aren't anything to...

I seriously love the packaging of 5 gum. its like the iPhone of gum experiences. specifically, the react flavor. it tastes good, which is a basic requirement, but it is also attractive and fun to get a stick! these were my thoughts just now as I picked up the package, and admired its design before I slid open the flap and picked out a piece. even the black gum wrappers on each individual length of gum shone impressively against the sunrise gradient of the opening.

Is it just me or did that first paragraph sound a little too sexual?

in other thrilling news, I played another...

just got back from a small wine launch party of a design client of mine - toasted toad cellars. my girlfriend teny referred me to them to draw their toad logo, and it was so exciting to see the result on the wine bottle, wine glasses, tshirts... the wine was good too :)

the drive was fairly long coming from San Jose and driving to Antioch. it was me, my roommate, dyana and quang :) we stopped at a mexican place beforehand but I regret it because there were hors doevres pairings with the wine tastings. the owner was so friendly and pleasant, and clearly passionate and proud of his...

This is my new go-to place. The last time I said that, it was at Monsoon on 3rd street in Santa Monica and I got food poisoning right after. Tonight, at 11:30pm, Quang and I enjoyed a late-night dinner at China Palace in Milpitas, open til 3am might I add.

The menu prices were amazing ($5-$7), they served us free tea and free pearl...

I got it from Wal-Mart in the mail, and it arrived SO FAST. What do I need a sewing machine for? The list goes on and on-- hemming jeans, hemming dresses made for tall people, taking IN a lot of my clothes :) making some of my old tops more interesting... so many things I can do...

If only I knew how to use the thing...

My first project will be to hem a pair of jeans but keep the original hem. This tutorial seems like my guide: http://www.daciaray.com/?p=38 - its from 2005 but Ive seen it before, and Im really just...

This is my third attempt to officially run in my shoes, and I'm a little concerned. Yesterday, I ran 1.5 miles and it felt so great I could have run more. Today, I slot in a 1.75 mile run and less than 1 mile in, my calves start screaming! I did use a different treadmill, but I'm afraid I'm overdoing it. Maybe I should have spaced a day in between the runs... I don't know. I'm just so impatient to start, and I didn't think one more measly mile would make my calves hurt so.

I ran the first mile, walked the next .25, and then ran the rest. I'm just glad I covered the distance....

I haven't run in awhile. I used to average about 20-30 miles a week the year before last, when I trained for my first marathon. Now I'm down to struggling to get myself to jog around the block.

I've been through this before though-- before that marathon I went through a similar slump, and wondered how I was ever able to run long distances back in college. I go through these phases of running and not running, but every time I pick it back up, I lose a lot of weight! Which I'm looking forward to in this next phase :)

I ran in my VFFs (the toe-shoes) the day before yesterday on...

I was thinking about the idea that when people see you "get in early" or work late, it's a good thing because then they will perceive that you are a hard worker.

Here I am, at around midnight, working away even though I've worked all day already. And we're supposed to be on holiday today. I'm not announcing this because I want everyone to think of me as a hard worker. I say it because, in fact: I really am one. I couldn't be anything else if I tried. All my life, this is what I've been. And ironically, this is probably why I don't care if people think or perceive whether I'm a hard...
